We give this concert to you our community for free. No Admission Fee. •  Sing one song of any genre. You may sing with no music or bring sheet music for accompaniment.

• Sing the first verse to Danny Boy or Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Both songs are attached to the return email for practice.

• Have a brief discussion with Douglas about their previous singing experience.

• Do a quick sight-reading example (rhythmic and sight-singing). No experience is

  necessary.

• Have their range tested and voice section selected (Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto).

In this interactive interest session, Douglas will lead you through the 8 pillars of healthy singing as gathered by his research in 2015-16. With tips, tricks, and techniques borrowed from famous choral conductors, singers, and music educators, this session will have you ready to get back on the risers as soon as possible. Be ready to move, breathe and even sing! From amateurs to professionals, “Back to Basics” proves to be a useful reminder to some, and brand new learning for others. We will explore subjects like your posture and breathing to resonance and register mix. There is always something new to be working on in any choral setting. Although we can not sing together in person, we can still join together in song.

Douglas will be presenting a brief introduction to his current research in the field of music education “Relationship Based Learning and Music Students’ Self Efficacy: A Brief Introduction”

“My Favorite Warm Up’s” is a workshop that Douglas created geared towards easy, rewarding and vocally healthy and stimulating warm ups for choristers of all ages!

Three workshops packed in to one session! “The first ten minutes and why it matters” discussing warm ups for barbershop choruses. “Back to Basics” which will discuss vocal health and healthy singing and “Oh thats what that is” diving into the barbershop score!

The SLP Middle School Choirs have been working extremely hard this semester. Come watch them sing in 2, 3 and 4 part harmony. From Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth” to Dillworth’s “Shine on Me.” This concert will surely be a family friendly and fun event.

St Louis Middle School 6/7/8th grade choirs + special performances by the middle school chamber choir, and the select show choir! 

Featuring two MN boy’s choirs, Hi Mark Quartet and the GNU small ensemble, the GNU will put its annual Christmas show featuring favorites like “Silent Night Medley”, and Randall Thompson’s “Alleluia”

Grades six through twelve all come together under one one room to perform for the SLP community! 

The Great Northern Union under the direction of Douglas Carnes will be a guest performer on the City Of Lakes Chorus "Send Off" Show! 

The Great Northern Union ft Signature will be presenting Heard It Through The Grapevine; where barbershop meets soul music! We will be singing some of the GNU's classic spirituals along with some new contest songs, and regular repertoire. Signature quartet will THRILL the audience with their "barbersoul" music. Along with this, The GNU will introduce our first Sing With Our Ears project youth chorus which focuses on bringing music to underserved choral communities. This is an event that you do NOT want to miss. 

As the Great Northern Union prepares for the 2019 International Chorus competition in Orlando, they will introduce their contest set for the first time right here in Nicollet MN! Come join the fun and watch all the choruses and quartets compete!

Douglas will be presenting one interest sessions at ACDA-MN for music educators from all over the Midwest.  His session, "Timid Singer? Wake Them Up!: A Guide to Building Confidence in Your Choristers" will help educators learn why their students are timid. Educators will be given easily applicable tools in order to correct timid behavior. They will be given a step by step guide to help build confidence in their singers.
